Maruti Suzuki Q1 profit rises 4.4% to Rs 1,556 crore; tax provisions rise on GST

Country largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki BSE -0.17 % on Thursday reported a flat profit growth of 4.4 per cent to Rs 1,556 crore for June quarter, hurt by higher deferred tax provisions.

The number came below Rs 1,684 crore profit estimated by analysts in an ET Now poll. Net sales for the quarter rose 16.17 per cent to Rs 17,132.4 crore, the company said in a BSE filing.

During the quarter, there was a one-off impact of compensation given to dealers for the tax losses on vehicles in the stock at the time of transitioning to GST, the company said.

The company sold 3,94,571 vehicles, including export of 26,140 units, during June quarter. This was 13.2 per cent higher than comparable numbers of last year.

The company said that the growth in volumes, favorable product mix, higher non-operating income and cost reduction efforts contributed to rise in profit.

HCL Tech posts 10.7% drop in Q1 profit; FY18 CC revenue guidance at 10.5-12.5%

IT major HCL Technologies BSE 2.31 % on Thursday reported a 10.7 per cent sequential fall in consolidated net profit (as per Ind As) at Rs 2,210 crore for the June quarter. The IT major had reported Rs 2,474 crore profit in the March quarter.

Consolidated revenue for the quarter rose 0.8 per cent QoQ to Rs 12,149 crore, the company said. This was 7.2 per cent higher than the previous quarter on YoY basis.

In dollar terms, revenue rose 3.7 per cent sequentially to $1,884 million. Net Income was down 3.8 per cent QoQ at $337 million.

Revenue in constant currency rose 2.6 per cent sequentially and 12.2 per cent on year-on-year basis, the company said.

The IT major expects FY18 revenue for the company to grow in 10.5-12.5 per cent in constant currency terms. This translates to 11.3 per cent to 13.3 per cent growth in dollar terms based on June 30th exchange rates.

Operating Margin is seen in 19.5 per cent to 20.5 per cent range, the company said in a BSE filing.

Gold drifts lower as dollar firms ahead of Fed - TradeBizz Research

Gold prices fell on Wednesday as the dollar firmed above multi-month lows, with investors waiting for clues on the U.S. Federal Reserve's tightening plans after the conclusion of a two-day meeting.

The U.S. central bank will issue its monetary policy statement at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT), where it is expected to hold interest rates unchanged and possibly hint that it will start winding down its massive holdings of bonds as early as September.

Spot gold fell 0.27 percent to $1,245.16 per ounce at 0629 GMT.

U.S. gold futures for August delivery fell 0.61 percent to $1,244.50 per ounce.

"Markets are certainly a little bit cautious ahead of the Fed meeting and that's probably hindering investor appetite," said ANZ analyst Daniel Hynes. "I think the market will be looking for any comments around inflation."

Economists expect the Fed's benchmark lending rate to remain in a target range of 1.00 percent to 1.25 percent.

"At this stage, we would rather be neutral on gold as Fed wording could throw the market off (in either direction)," said INTL FCStone analyst Edward Meir.

Higher interest rates would push yields up and likely boost the dollar.

Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold, while a stronger dollar makes bullion more expensive for non-U.S. investors.

"Stronger U.S. economic data has also weighed on gold, but has been negated by the weak inflation outlook," said ANZ's Hynes. "Assuming that we don't see any sort of change in language from the Fed meeting, I suspect we'll see safe haven demand pushing gold prices up."

Long-dated U.S. Treasury yields jumped by the most in almost five months on Tuesday as stocks hit record highs.

Asian stocks steadied, while the dollar held firm as investors awaited the Fed's policy decision.

Meanwhile, holdings at the SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, fell 1.13 percent to 800.45 tonnes on Tuesday from 809.62 tonnes on Monday.

In other precious metals, silver slipped 0.6 percent to $16.36 per ounce.

Platinum edged 0.2 percent lower to $922.00 per ounce, while palladium dropped 0.4 percent to $853.70 per ounce.

Rupee opens 5 paise lower against US dollar ahead of US Fed outcome

The rupee opened 5 paise down 64.43 against dollar on Wednesday on account of buying of American currency by banks and importers

With the FOMC rate outcome later in the day, currency traders preferred to stay on the sidelines and avoided taking any long positions.

The rupee on Tuesday settled 4 paise down at 64.38 against the US dollar. The RBI, meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 64.3580 and the euro at 75.0607.

Meanwhile, domestic equity markets opened in green following mixed global cues. The BSE Sensex opened 27.72 points, or 0.09 per cent, up at 32,255.99, while NSE Nifty index opened 19.10 points, or 0.19 per cent, up at 9,983.65.

Foreign portfolio investors stood net sellers in domestic equity markets on Tuesday and sold shares worth Rs 270.33 crore with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 4806.28 crore and Rs 5076.61 crore, respectively.

Government bonds fell for the first time in three sessions on Tuesday, as investors booked profit from record high prices day before, awaiting the Fed policy meeting outcome.
